Here we go again. Losing the heart of a team to the NFL Dollar Call. We've talked about it but do you think can be done to stop players from going to the draft? Perhaps Red Shirt them in the NFL and limit the signing bonus to anyone who fails to graduate college.

I have a feeling if you had that sort of system a fair number of the blue-chip prospects who currently go to major colleges (that is, the sort of players who declare for the draft early) would go to something like the CFL rather than go to college. Sort of like what's starting to happen with the NBA -- you're seeing a few players head to Europe who would've simply gone pro after high school before the age 19 rule, and if they do well there will probably be more.
I think education is great, but I don't see the point in forcing people to go to college when their livelihood doesn't require it -- whether that livelihood be football, art, software, or whatever.
I don't disagree but I think it is hard for the outside options to support all the guys who think they are NFL stars to be. I hate thinking of all the money these guys get from colleges to play ball and what for? Mostly to gain college money for football and other programs instead of educating people.
I think a certain percentage only go to college because they can't do anything else. They can't go straight from high school to the NFL, I don't think they're big enough to go to the other pro leagues right out of high school, and at this point it's the most direct route to the NFL. The only other real option for a top-tier talent is a JUCO or one of the prep schools (like Hargreave), and that's only if they can't qualify.
It's my sense -- and I may well be wrong about this -- but I also think more players started to declare early when Willis McGahee blew out his knee in the Orange (?) Bowl. Especially running backs who might otherwise have stayed.
